Gallbladder Removed Through Vagina

What can this be called? Wonder of the Medical Science? Or something else? Whatever it is, it is a reality that the surgeons at the University of California, San Diego Medical Center have successfully removed a patient's gallbladder through the vagina! It has been reported that the clinical trial was conducted for the evaluation of the safety and also the efficiency of performing abdominal procedures through the body's natural openings for the elimination of scarring.

The procedure, is known as Natural Orifice Translumenal Endoscopic Surgery (NOTES), and involves several procedures. This includes transitory surgical instruments, and a tiny camera, through a natural orifice, such as the mouth or the vagina, to the desired organ. From the surgeons it has come to the knowledge that by means of avoiding major incisions through the skin, muscle, and nerves of the abdomen, patients may be in positions to experience a quicker recovery. The surgeons confide that there shall be less pain and scarring while reducing the risk of post operative hernias. The entire NOTES surgery on a 42-year old San Diego resident was completed during a 1.5 hour procedure, removing the gallbladder through the vagina. Dr. Santiago Horgan, M.D., the noted surgeon in minimally invasive and robotic surgery, and Dr. Mark A. Talamini, M.D., Professor and chair of the Department of Surgery led the team.
While talking to this correspondent Dr. Santiago Horgan, the acclaimed Director of Minimally Invasive Surgery at UCSD Medical Center said, "We are testing a whole new approach to minimally invasive surgery." "Yesterday's procedure went exceptionally well and we look forward to studying and comparing all the study results to determine if this surgery is a desirable option for patients,' Horgan added.
